Welcome to The Coventry Charity
The Coventry CharityRegistered Charity no. 201093
Almshouse Association no. M154
Overview
The Coventry Charity runs the almshouses on The Holloway in Droitwich. We have 42 properties including studio flats, one-bedroom flats and two-bedroom houses. We offer a friendly and supportive community for independent living. There is a warden on duty for a few hours each day Monday to Friday and all properties have a Tunstall emergency alarm point. Background heating and water rates are included in the service charge.
Vacancies arise from time to time. We maintain a list of applicants interested in our properties so it is worth contacting us and applying even if we don't have a suitable vacancy at the moment.
Criteria for Residents
We have three main criteria for accepting new residents:
- You need to have limited financial means
- You need to be aged 55 or over
- You need to have a long-standing connection with Droitwich
The trustees will consider applications from people under 55 where there is considerable need.
History
The charity was founded in 1686 as the result of horse race! The Earl of Coventry (the owner of Croome Court) won a bet, with his best race horse, resulting in Lord Pakington having to pay for the cost of building the almshouses but then naming them after the Earl of Coventry. We have since built a block named after Lord Pakington, so these days he gets some credit.
The almshouses have steadily grown with buildings dating from the seventeenth century, the Edwardian period, the 1930s, 1980s and 1990s.
